The Swedish city of Stockholm was placed into lockdown a short time after a police officer was stabbed in the neck.
According to reports, the attack took place in a stairwell at the Metro station Medborgarplatsen.
The weapon was seized by other officers at the scene and the alleged attacker is now in custody.
The adjacent square has also been sealed off while investigations into the attack continue.
Stockholm Police have released a statement:
“We have a policeman who has been hurt at Medborgarplatsen.
“It’s quiet at the scene and the police are taking witness statements.
“We have a number of patrols.”
A number of witness accounts have appeared on social media, and they have indicated that the attack took place at around 10.30am local time.
One said: “I got above ground from the subway when the police seized a man, he appeared to be aged 30.”
Another witness said: “An ambulance has been here … it is unclear if it was with the police officer who was hurt.”
As investigations are currently underway and at a very early stage, there have been no indications about whether or not the attack is being treated as an act of terror.
It has come at a time when the whole of Europe is at a high level of alert after a number of terror attacks in recent months, with both military and police being targets.
This is a developing story and more details will be made available as and when they are published.
